CONCEPT
Mongyudowondo
Mongyudowondo, a landscape painting by An Gyeon. The greatest painter of the Joseon Dynasty in the 15th century.
This work portrays the village of radish flowers that the painter traveled in his colorful silky dream. Mountain cliffs covered by a thick fog and contrastingly clear peach blossoms make the painting one of Joseon’s most splendorous landscape paintings. Radiant flowers were in full bloom on the misty hills, and houses woven with weaving grass clustered together. Along with the fantastic waterfall flowing in two streams, one can also see an empty boat swaying on the water’s edge. This artwork is a dream paradise where the real world and the ideal coexist.
Celebrations for the Governor of Pyeongyang
This painting, composed of eight screens, depicts the celebration taking place in the city of Pyongyang, capital of Pyeong-an province which was considered as the banquet in the celebration of the new Pyeong-an governor’s assumption of office. It has been regarded as one of the most predominant ones which well portrayed the times of Joseon dynasty because of the detailed depiction of the customs and people throughout the various social classes with professional touch, color and composition of the picture, as comparable as a documentary painting.
